Das IBM-System namens &#8220;<strong>Yellowstone<\/strong>&#8221; steht in dem eigens errichteten &#8220;NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center&#8221; (NWSC) in <strong>Cheyenne, Wyoming<\/strong> und wurde nach dem bekannten Nationalpark dieses Staates benannt.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wetter-center.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/nwsc.jpg\" style=\"width: 350px\" width=\"350\" hspace=\"5\" border=\"0\" align=\"left\" title=\"NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center\" alt=\"NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center\" \/>Der alte NCAR-Supercomputer namens &#8220;<strong>Bluefire<\/strong>&#8221; wurde im Jahr 2008 in Betrieb genommen. Er war seinerzeit der erste wassergek\u00fchlte Gro\u00dfrechner. Das neue &#8220;Yellowstone&#8221;-System verf\u00fcgt \u00fcber <strong>74.592 Prozessoren<\/strong>, <strong>149.200 Gigabyte<\/strong> Arbeitsspeicher und hat eine Rechenleistung von <strong>1.600 Teraflops<\/strong> (1,6 Billiarden Flie\u00dfkommarechnungen pro Sekunde). Damit ist er \u00fcber <strong>20 mal schneller<\/strong> und hat 12 mal mehr Arbeitsspeicher als sein Vorg\u00e4nger.<\/p>\n<p>Die Lage des Rechenzentrums in Cheyenne wurde auch wegen seines Klimas gew\u00e4hlt. Das <strong>windige Wetter<\/strong> auf den High Plains sorgt f\u00fcr eine nat\u00fcrliche K\u00fchlung. Das Rechenzentrum wurde extra so gebaut, dass dieser Wind genutzt werden kann. Weitere Energie sparende Ma\u00dfnahmen f\u00fchren dazu, dass etwa <strong>90 Prozent<\/strong> der Energie f\u00fcr die Rechenleistung genutzt werden kann. In herrk\u00f6mmlichen Rechenzentren sind dies nur etwa 70 Prozent oder weniger.<\/p>\n<p>Dank der Fortschritte in der Computertechnologie in den letzten Jahre ist im Vergleich mit seinem Vorg\u00e4nger &#8220;Bluefire&#8221; der Energieverbrauch f\u00fcr dieselbe Rechenleistung um beachtliche 85 Prozent gesunken.
