Das kann man gerade in Nordamerika beobachten, wo die <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tagesschau.de\/ausland\/kaelte-usa-101.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">k\u00e4lteste Silvesternacht seit Jahrzehnten<\/a> erwartet wird. Doch wie kann das sein?<\/p>\n<p>Einer <a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/27092017\/polar-vortex-cold-snap-arctic-ice-loss-global-warming-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studie<\/a> des Potsdam-Institut f\u00fcr Klimafolgenforschung (PIK) sieht die Ursache daf\u00fcr in der Erw\u00e4rmung der Arktis, die die Winde des <strong>stratosph\u00e4rischen Polarwirbels<\/strong> beeinflusst. Die Arktis erw\u00e4rmt sich schneller als der Rest des Planeten. Diese Erw\u00e4rmung verringert die Menge des arktischen Meereises und l\u00e4sst mehr W\u00e4rme aus dem Ozean entweichen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wetter-center.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/polar-vortex-1dec13-jan14_NOAA.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2083\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wetter-center.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/polar-vortex-1dec13-jan14_NOAA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wetter-center.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/polar-vortex-1dec13-jan14_NOAA.jpg 924w, https:\/\/www.wetter-center.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/polar-vortex-1dec13-jan14_NOAA-600x344.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wetter-center.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/polar-vortex-1dec13-jan14_NOAA-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wetter-center.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/polar-vortex-1dec13-jan14_NOAA-768x440.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Den Klimaforschern zur Folge, verursacht die freigesetzte Meeresenergie eine <strong>Schw\u00e4chung des Polarwirbels<\/strong> \u00fcber der Arktis, der normalerweise die kalte Luft \u00fcber der Polarregion zusammenh\u00e4lt, wie im Bild oben links zu erkennen ist (Polarwirbel im Dezember 2013, Quelle: NOAA). Wird der Wirbel schw\u00e4cher oder bricht ganz auseinander, kann kalte polare Luft h\u00e4ufiger nach S\u00fcden vorsto\u00dfen, wie im Januar 2014 (Bild oben rechts) oder jetzt in Nordamerika.<\/p>\n<p>Der Polarwirbel war schon immer unterschiedlich stark, aber die Studie fand heraus, dass die schw\u00e4cheren Phasen zunehmend <strong>l\u00e4nger dauern<\/strong> und mit kalten Wintern in Nordeuropa und Russland zusammenfallen.\u00a0Im Zeitraum 1979 bis 2015 stieg die mittlere L\u00e4nge von <strong>Kaltlufteinbr\u00fcchen<\/strong> von 5,3 Tagen in der ersten H\u00e4lfte der Studienzeit bis 14,1 Tage in der zweiten H\u00e4lfte.<\/p>\n<p>In diesen Phasen str\u00f6mt arktische Luft nach Russland und Europa. Damit l\u00e4sst sich\u00a0der gr\u00f6\u00dfte Teil der <strong>Abk\u00fchlung eurasischer Winter<\/strong> seit 1990 erkl\u00e4ren. In der Region von Skandinavien bis nach Sibirien hat seit 1990 die H\u00f6he der Schneedecke im Winter zugenommen und die durchschnittliche Temperatur ist gesunken.<\/p>\n<p>Andere Wissenschaftler sind allerdings nicht sicher, ob schmelzendes Meereis den polaren Wirbel so stark beeinflusst. Sie glauben, dass andere Faktoren wie langfristige Schwankungen der <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wetter-center.de\/blog\/?p=1731\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meeresoberfl\u00e4chentemperaturen<\/a> wie El Ni\u00f1o und Ver\u00e4nderungen in den Tropen eine gr\u00f6\u00dfere Rolle spielen k\u00f6nnten.
