Kaum vorstellbar ist, dass es unter dem Eis jede Menge Seen gibt, die sogar teilweise untereinander verbunden sind und die so Wasser austauschen. Die NASA hat jetzt eine Karte von 124 solcher &#8220;<strong>aktiver subglazialer Seen<\/strong>&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/topics\/earth\/features\/active_lakes.html\" target=\"_blank\">ver\u00f6ffentlicht<\/a>. Die folgende Abbildung zeigt diese Karte:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wetter-center.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/381237main_antarctica_20090825_full.jpg\" title=\"Seen in der Antarktis\" alt=\"Seen in der Antarktis\" width=\"450\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Die Farben stehen f\u00fcr die Wassermenge der Seen: orange und rot sind gr\u00f6\u00dfere Seen, gr\u00fcn und blau kleinere Seen, violett f\u00fcr &#8220;inaktive&#8221; Seen ohne Verbindung zu anderen Seen (Karte von <span class=\"img_comments_right\">Ben Smith, University of Washington). <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Die Existenz von etwa 280 subglazialen Seen ist bereits seit l\u00e4ngerem mit Hilfe von Radardaten festgestellt worden. Um herauszufinden, ob diese Seen aktiv sind, also ihre Gr\u00f6\u00dfe \u00e4ndern, wurden die Daten des NASA-Satelliten <a href=\"http:\/\/icesat.gsfc.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">ICESat<\/a> (Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite) genutzt, mit denen \u00fcbrigens bereits ein dramatischer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wetter-center.de\/blog\/?p=188\">R\u00fcckgang des Meereises<\/a> in der Arktis nachgewiesen wurde. Der Satellit kann mithilfe eines Lasers zentimetergenau die H\u00f6he des antarktischen Eisschildes messen.<\/p>\n<p>Doch allein aus der H\u00f6he kann man noch nicht auf die aktiven subglazialen Seen schlie\u00dfen. Hierzu ben\u00f6tigt man noch die zeitliche <strong>Ver\u00e4nderung der H\u00f6he des Eisschildes<\/strong>. Aus einer pl\u00f6tzlichen Verringerung der H\u00f6he k\u00f6nnen die Forscher n\u00e4mlich schlie\u00dfen, dass sich unter dem Eis ein See <strong>entleert<\/strong>. Da das Wasser auch irgendwo hin muss, steigt an anderer Stelle das Eisschild in die H\u00f6he, auch dies kann gemessen werden. Auf diese Weise lassen sich nicht nur die aktiven Seen identifizieren, sondern auch die subglazialen <strong>Verbindungskan\u00e4le<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>124 Seen wurden als aktiv klassifiziert, die meisten davon befinden sich in K\u00fcstengebieten. Das ist deswegen interessant, weil es zu der Entdeckung passt, dass die <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wetter-center.de\/blog\/?p=74\">Gletscher<\/a> der Antarktis heute etwa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wetter-center.de\/blog\/?p=52\">20 mal schneller schmelzen<\/a> als fr\u00fcher.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Denkt man an die Antarktis, stellen sich wohl die meisten Menschen einen Kontinent mit einem kompakten Eisschild vor.
