Zwei Satelliten werden routinem\u00e4\u00dfig die Oberfl\u00e4che unseres\u00a0Planeten \u00fcberwachen\u00a0und nach Zeichen suchen, die auf einen zuk\u00fcnftigen Ausbruch hindeuten k\u00f6nnten.<\/p>\n<p>Die\u00a0Satelliten sp\u00fcren\u00a0<strong>Ver\u00e4nderungen in der Form des Erdbodens<\/strong> auf.\u00a0Wenn ein <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wetter-center.de\/blog\/?p=1475\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vulkan<\/a> aktiv zu werden droht, kann so Alarm ausgel\u00f6st werden. Etwa 1.500 Vulkane weltweit sind potenziell aktiv, aber nur ein paar Dutzend werden\u00a0derzeit \u00fcberwacht. Bevor ein Vulkan ausbricht, erhebt sich Magma von tief unter der Erde, dadurch hebt sich die Erdoberfl\u00e4che. Gew\u00f6hnlich beginnt der Prozess an\u00a0der Flanke eines Vulkans oder am\u00a0Kraterrand. Diese zwei Satelliten\u00a0\u00fcberfliegen regelm\u00e4\u00dfig die gesamte Landoberfl\u00e4che der Erde. Durch den Vergleich von aufeinanderfolgenden Sentinel-Bildern k\u00f6nnen mit Hilfe der sogenannten <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interferometric_Synthetic_Aperture_Radar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Radar-Interferometrie<\/a> kleinste\u00a0Ver\u00e4nderungen der Oberfl\u00e4che eines Vulkans verfolgt werden, und zwar in der Gr\u00f6\u00dfenordnung von nur wenigen Millimetern.<\/p>\n<p>Diese\u00a0Technik gibt es schon seit \u00fcber 20 Jahren, aber sie\u00a0ist bisher\u00a0nur <strong>r\u00fcckwirkend<\/strong> verwendet worden, um zu verstehen, was bei einem Vulkan passiert ist, nachdem er ausgebrochen ist. Mit dem neuen Projekt werden nun erstmals solche Daten in nahezu Echtzeit ausgewertet, um <strong>Prognosen<\/strong> zu erstellen.<\/p>\n<p>Bei verd\u00e4chtigen \u00c4nderungen wird\u00a0eine <strong>Warnung<\/strong> f\u00fcr die Wissenschaftler ausgegeben. Dies\u00a0bedeutet noch nicht, dass eine Eruption unmittelbar bevorsteht\u00a0ist, sondern soll sicherstellen, dass die Ortschaften\u00a0in der unmittelbaren\u00a0Umgebung des Vulkans vorgewarnt werden k\u00f6nnen.\u00a0Vulkane, die am wenigsten \u00fcberwacht werden, sind\u00a0bei einem Ausbruch oft\u00a0am gef\u00e4hrlichsten, da\u00a0die Menschen nicht\u00a0rechtzeitig alarmiert werden und sich so nicht in Sicherheit\u00a0bringen k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMET<\/strong>, das <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/comet.nerc.ac.uk\/\">&#8220;Centre for Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0hat in Island das neue Monitoring-System erfolgreich gestest.\u00a0Nun l\u00e4uft es als Prototyp\u00a0f\u00fcr ganz <strong>Europa und in Teilen Asiens<\/strong>. Der n\u00e4chste Schritt\u00a0ist, die automatisierte Erkennung von Bodenverformungen auf\u00a0Afrika sowie\u00a0Mittel- und S\u00fcdamerika auszudehnen. Diese Regionen haben einige sehr gro\u00dfe, explosive Vulkane, die nur sehr begrenzt vor Ort \u00fcberwacht werden. So gibt es in Ecuador etwa 80 Vulkane, von denen vier zu einem beliebigen Zeitpunkt ausbrechen k\u00f6nnen.
